At long last a live action version of the greatest anime series of all time is coming! As a HUGE Yamato fan, I am psyched like crazy about this thing. Check out the trailer below, Space Battleship Yamato opens in Japan this December!

Space Battleship Yamato is an anime series from the 70's that made HUGE waves in Japan during its run, and enjoyed a modest following here in the United States under the title "Star Blazers." The story of the first season (and the inspiration for this movie) tells the story of Earth in the year 2199. The human race is on the brink of extinction thanks to massive radioactive polution caused by the Planet Bombs of the mysterious Gamilon Empire. All seems lost, as the Earth's space fleets are no match for Gamilon's superior technology. A ray of hope arrives, however, when Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar sends word to Earth that she has the technology to remove the pollution from the planet, but a journey of 148,000 lightyears is required to reach the planet Iscandar. And so, a brave crew of the Earth's finest specialists set off in the newly built space battleship (which was created using the hull of the Yamato which sank during WWII), with only one year to make their trip and back before all life on Earth becomes extinct. The anime did have its first new installment in about 30 years last year, but this new movie is basically a retelling of the first season's story, but in live action form.

Great thing about the popularity of Yamato, is that there are some US studios eyeing it and it may end up here in limited release in the USA maybe during this Summer, 2011. Let's keep our hopes up. It is not going to be a straight to DVD release here, as those behind the movie want the movie to get a regular cinema release prior to any DVD/Blu-Ray disc productions. and...Hi all!

I would travel to see this on a big screen. I would take you all with me to see it if you lived anywhere near me. Yamato is a treasure that MUST be shared with today's public. This amazing movie is the best way to do it. The reviews I've read put it in the stratosphere of amazing. Can't wait!

It's not on DVD here in the U.S. yet (though I'm still hoping it will be soon), so the only way to get your hands on a copy is to import it. I would suggest Amazon Japan, just make sure you've got a player with multi-region capabilities. Or, if you just can't do that, you can check it on YouTube, here's the first part: www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0wdoNiFAtM&feature=relatedLet me know how you like it, and remember to think of me when Desslok shows up.
