This is by far one of my favorite Phantasy Star games I've played. Granted, I've only played Phantasy Star Online Episode 1, 2, and 3... But its still my favorite.
You have alot more variety for what type of character you want to create. There are three races and three major class groups.
First, the races.
Human: Its pretty much just that. Humans. They're the 'all around' race. They dont specialize in Techniques (magic), and they dont hit as hard as a CAST. They're the jack-of-all-trades, master of none.
CAST: These are your combat specialists. They cant use Techniques, but they are the only ones who can use traps. Plus, they get an automatic health regeneration pretty much all of the time. And if you stand still, they regenerate even faster. They also tend to have more defense and health than the other races, and definately hit the hardest with weapons.
Newman: These are your magic specialists. They tend to have the least amount of health and defense between all three races, but they can learn quite a bit more magic than a human. Plus, they get an automatic PP regeneration, identical to the CAST's health regeneration.. PP is your mana, pretty much. Its used for Techniques
and your weapon's special ability, if it has one.
Next, the three major class groups.
Each major class group has at least four different classes you can be in each. The exception is the HUnters, which have six.
HUnter: These are your direct combat specialists. They generally do high damage, have high defenses, and high health health. They use swords, sabers, spears, gunblades... Pretty much anything that cuts or stabs. There are a total of six classes you can be if you decide to be a HUnter. Four of them are humans, two of them are CASTs, and two of them are Newmans. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages.
RAnger: These are your indirect specialists. They have the highest accuracy, do decent damage, and have enough defenses to take a few hits from a boss if it gets too close to you. These guys do decent damage They use handguns, rifles, mechguns (dual-wielding uzi's pretty much), rifles, bazookas... Pretty much anything that'll blow your enemies to smitherines from afar. There are a total of four classes you can be if you decide to be a RAnger. Two of them are humans, and two are CASTs. No Newmans for the RAngers.
FOrce: These are your magic users. They can learn every bit of Technique thats in the game. From attacks, healing, increasing the group's statistics, decreasing the enemies statistics... Depending on your type of gameplay. They can do amazing damage, or be simply your party's healer. They dont do that much damage with weapons, however. And they dont have that much health, or defenses. They mainly use weapons that increase their magical potential. Rods, wands... There are a total of four classes you can be if you decide to be a FOrce. Two humans, and two newmans. No CAST FOrces, because they cant use Techniques.
Also, this game has a different beginning storyline for the different races, as far as I have seen. Havnt gotten very far in the game, but they do start out differently. And the story is pretty interesting, thus far.
This game is for the DS, and can be played online. I havnt played online much... But as far as I can tell, theres no story if you play online. Thats the only drawback I can see.
I currently have a Human FOrce that I plan on being able to run in and actually do damage with his weapon, instead of just relying on Techniques. I also plan on making a Newman HUnter that will be the party's buffer (increasing their statistics) and do a bit of healing on the side. And probably a CAST HUnter. I dont like RAngers all that much. I prefer to beat stuff up with swords and the like.
But if you guys get the game, feel free to drop me a message and we can team up
