Can someone help me out? What makes a game retro? I've been wondering about this for a long time?

From the dictionary:
"denoting something associated with or revived from the past"
Example of a retro game:
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is retro as it goes back to the original style of gameplay of the old Super Mario games. Another example would be Donkey Kong Country Returns being retro as it goes back to the original style of gameplay from the old Donkey Kong Country games.
Make sense?

Why cant it be retro? It is, if you think about it in a certain way.
Gaming platforms today (Wii/PS3/360) no longer require memory cards. They all have built-in memory.
But the Gamecube -does- require a memory card. Why cant that be an example of 'retro style' gaming?
But the reason most people dont think of the Gamecube as retro is simply cause it's not old enough, I believe. It was Nintendo's second-latest home console, the Wii coming out after it of course.
And most people dont think the Gamecube was a great platform. And people commonly let 'retro' and 'awesome' go hand-in-hand.
